Is the tool really free?
Yes, all core features are free and always will be. Optional Starter and Pro features (email delivery, AI receipt scanner, tax advisor portal) start at 9 EUR/month.
Where is my data stored?
On the Free plan, locally in your browser. With Starter or Pro, securely encrypted in the cloud — synced across all your devices. You decide.
What happens if I clear my browser cache?
On the Free plan: local data will be lost — that's why you should create regular JSON backups. With Starter/Pro: your data is safe in the cloud, just log in again.
Is the tool compliant with tax regulations?
Yes. All invoices contain the required information per Section 14 UStG. XRechnung (EN 16931) and ZUGFeRD are supported. The GoBD audit log documents all changes in a tamper-proof manner.
Can my tax advisor work with this?
Yes. DATEV export (SKR04) and EUeR CSV can be imported directly into common accounting software.
Does the tool work offline?
Penunz is a cloud-based app that requires an internet connection. Your data is stored securely on German servers. The app works great on mobile browsers as a Progressive Web App.
What professions is the tool suitable for?
For all self-employed professionals and freelancers: IT, consulting, design, trades, coaches, therapists and more. Tax tips are currently optimized for IT freelancers.
Can I use multiple tax rates?
Yes. Each invoice line item can be individually set to 19% or 7% VAT. The tax breakdown is generated automatically.
How does the AI receipt scanner work?
Upload a photo or PDF — the AI automatically recognizes the date, amount and VAT. Offline via Tesseract.js (free) or optionally via Claude Vision API (more accurate, requires API key).
Is there a mobile app?
Not yet as a native app, but the tool is responsive and works in the mobile browser. A PWA version is planned.
